Is It Really A Community Wind Program?

Members of Crow Wing Power have recently received a letter from Arcadia Power to “join your neighbor’s in Minnesota’s first Community Wind Program.” You may be asking what this program is. We have put together some Q&A to help answer some of your questions.

What is this program?

Arcadia is a bill pay service, they are not a power provider. They are marketing themselves as an alternative way for you to purchase Wind Energy but after you read the fine print on their web site it is clear they do not purchase wind power and deliver it to your home.

Crow Wing Power offers a Green Power (Wind) program in which members can elect to purchase Wind Energy while staying in control of their billing statement and method of payment.

Is this offer from Arcadia legitimate?

Arcadia Power is a company that buys green tags (Renewable Energy Certificates or RECs). See next section for explanation of RECs. Simply put, they are a bill-pay service. Their bill to you includes the amount of your Crow Wing Power bill plus fees for the green tags they use to purchase Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs).

Crow Wing Power is your power provider.

What are Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs)?

According to Wikipedia, RECs or green-tags are

“tradable, non-tangible energy commodities in the United States that represent proof that 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity was generated from an eligible renewable energy resource (renewable electricity) and was fed into the shared system of power lines which transport energy.

These certificates can be sold and traded or bartered, and the owner of the REC can claim to have purchased renewable energy.”

Before entering into a contract with Arcadia Power, please contact us about our Green Power (Wind) program for complete details or click here.

Who gets Crow Wing Power member capital credits?

As long as the Crow Wing Power account is in your name (regardless of who pays the bill), you will get the capital credits. We do not know about Arcadia Power’s contractual agreements so before signing up with them you should read the fine print.

When there is a neighborhood power outage, who is responsible (Crow Wing Power or Arcadia)?

As we’ve stated, Arcadia Power is not a power provider. Crow Wing Power is still your contact for power outages.

As always, please feel free to contact Crow Wing Power with any questions you may have.
