October is National Co-op Month and Breast Cancer Awareness Month
In October, members from more than 29,000 cooperatives nationwide will join to celebrate the advantages of cooperative membership and recognize the benefits and values co-ops bring to their members and communities.
Rural electric cooperatives were formed when the cost of expanding service to rural areas discouraged for-profit utilities from serving these areas.
In 1936, Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Rural Electrification Act as part of his New Deal programs to overcome the Great Depression. The law allowed the federal government to make low-cost loans to fund rural electric cooperative start-ups. At the time, just 10 percent of rural Americans had access. By 1950, 90 percent of American farms had electricity.
Crow Wing Power is your local, member-owned and not-for-profit cooperative power provider. As member-owners, you elect directors to represent you on the board. Your rates are set to cover costs, not to build shareholder profit, and each year, margins are returned to you as Capital Credits. Crow Wing Power also gives back through Operation Round-Up, our scholarship program and employee service. We power communities to improve our local quality of life.
As a cooperative, we are guided by seven principles
- Open and Voluntary Membership
- Democratic Member Control
- Members' Economic Participation
- Autonomy and Independence
- Education, Training and Information
- Cooperation Among Cooperatives
- Concern For Community
These principles are underpinned by six ideals—the so-called cooperative values of Self-Help, Self-Responsibility, Democracy, Equality, Equity, and Solidarity. In addition, the International Cooperative Alliance lists cooperative “ethical values” of Honesty, Openness, Social Responsibility, and Caring for Others.
Please join us in celebrating co-ops around the country during October!
